This sprawling triple album moves through rousing rock, somber ballads, country-rock, gospel-tinged folk, roots grooves, and noisy experimental turns, unified by a dusky atmosphere and weathered, conversational vocals. Its songwriting, emotional candor, humor, and shifting arrangements are compelling, though the abundance occasionally blurs together and recedes into the background.
