I Must Be Dreaming is a warm, muscular blend of retro soul, bluesy and garage rock, funk, pop, and psychedelia, driven by Brittany Howard’s commanding vocals and an energized three-piece interplay. Its expanded textures and mature emotional range are rewarding, though occasional sleepy love songs and familiar songwriting keep the comeback from feeling fully transformative.
